We wanted to dedicate a day to come together and spread positivity and love among this community. Some incarcerated loved ones have longer sentences than others. We wanted to show them that they are not alone no matter the circumstance.

Love Your Inmate Day

Love Your Inmate DayGlobal Incarcerated Loved One Day

One of the most basic and important ways to support someone in prison is by communicating their experience in a humanizing way. The word “inmate” takes one part of a person’s life and defines them by it. It’s a word loaded with stigma and dangerous implications. Our incarcerated loved ones and their families have told us that the word feels hurtful and dehumanizing. That’s why we want to remove the word “inmate” from our vocabulary.

We respect the experiences of both incarcerated people and their families, having lived it ourselves from both sides. Our goal at Pelipost is to create a more compassionate and inclusive environment for families experiencing incarceration and help you learn how to support someone in prison, whether by sending photos to prison or using people-first language when talking about someone who is incarcerated.

Everyone deserves to be celebrated

There’s a certain stigma surrounding people within this community — a community united by the experience of incarceration.

We created Global Incarcerated Loved One Day not only to support our incarcerated loved ones directly but to shatter the stigma. Everyone makes mistakes, and it’s ok to talk about it. In fact, it’s good to talk about it because we’re all people, and we all deserve to feel loved and supported.

Reach out to your loved ones this year and let them know that you see them.

Participate in Global Incarcerated Loved One Day — and as often as you want — by sending photos directly to their correctional facility through the Pelipost app.
